How sports dress up for TV
축구중계 is one of the most important parts of television programming. But not every sporting discipline is a guarantee for high ratings. Fringe sports in particular have to adapt to the needs of the media in order to have a chance of being shown on TV. How much has sport changed under the influence of the media?
Sport and the media are closely interrelated: the media need sporting events as content and sport, in turn, depends on media presence. Along with sponsoring, merchandising and ticket sales, TV broadcasting rights have become one of the most important sources of finance for sports associations. Since the broadcasting time is limited, however, there is competition between the different sports for media presence. If you want to get your sport on TV, you have to play by the rules of the media. At the same time, top-class sport is increasingly becoming a media sport.
More tension, less idling
In the shadow of popular TV sport disciplines such as 축구중계 or ice hockey, fringe sports such as table tennis, biathlon or volleyball only play a subordinate role in the media. In order to present themselves in a way that is more suitable for television, those responsible are increasingly interfering with the rules of these sports. The sports associations launch the conversion of sports facilities, the introduction of new types of sports equipment and changes in the established set of rules. Everything under the motto: More moments of tension, less idling.
All-round renewal at the start of the season
But even more popular sports disciplines such as tennis are not immune to reforms. Those responsible call for shorter warm-up phases or four instead of six games to win the set. There is even talk of saying goodbye to the second service attempt. But what is still hotly debated in tennis has long been a reality in ice hockey: the entry into force of new rules primarily affects power and boxing. By expanding the attacking third at the expense of the middle space, even more speed should be guaranteed in the attacking zone.
Victory-loss dynamic generates audience interest
The fact that not all rule changes caused by the media work smoothly is shown by the so-called “golden goal” in축구중계 . The rule that says the first goal scored during extra time decides the game should add some excitement. But there was no sign of this in most games: the players only acted more cautiously for fear of conceding the game-winning goal. There was considerable criticism and the “Golden Goal” rule was abolished.
So it doesn’t always pay off to adapt sports to media requirements. The sport is characterized by its competitive character – this win-defeat dynamic pulls the audience under its spell. If the sport loses its authenticity due to too much staging, the interest of the public also decreases. Because media sport can only work in the long run if it remains a sport.
